Plot Summary

The film begins with a voice-over by Rani Mukerji, who plays Gulabji, a prostitute who narrates the story of Saawariya (meaning "beloved" in Hindi). She introduces Ranbir Raj (Ranbir Kapoor), a free-spirited and optimistic musician who arrives in a town called Nawazuddin. He rents a room in Lilianji's (Zohra Sehgal) house, who treats him like her own son. He also befriends Gulabji and her fellow prostitutes, who adore him for his innocence and charm.

One night, Ranbir Raj sees a mysterious girl standing alone on a bridge. He is instantly smitten by her beauty and follows her to her house. He learns that her name is Sakina (Sonam Kapoor) and that she is waiting for her lover, Imaan (Salman Khan), who left her a year ago but promised to return on Eid. Ranbir Raj tries to win Sakina's heart by singing songs, giving her gifts, and making her laugh. He also tells her his dream of becoming a famous singer and traveling the world.

Sakina gradually warms up to Ranbir Raj and confides in him about her past. She reveals that she was an orphan who was adopted by a kind couple, who died in a car accident. She then met Imaan, who saved her from a group of thugs and took care of her. He also gave her his grandmother's ring as a symbol of their love. However, he had to leave for an undisclosed reason and asked her to wait for him until Eid.

Ranbir Raj realizes that he is in love with Sakina and decides to confess his feelings to her on the last night before Eid. He takes her to a church and asks her to marry him. He also shows her his grandmother's anklet, which he considers as his lucky charm. Sakina is touched by his proposal but tells him that she loves Imaan and cannot betray him. She asks Ranbir Raj to be her friend and nothing more.

Heartbroken, Ranbir Raj leaves Sakina and returns to his room. He packs his belongings and prepares to leave the town. Meanwhile, Sakina waits for Imaan at the bridge, but he does not show up. She runs to Ranbir Raj's house, hoping to find him there. She sees Lilianji, who tells her that Ranbir Raj has left and gives her a letter that he wrote for her. In the letter, Ranbir Raj expresses his love for Sakina and wishes her happiness with Imaan. He also tells her that he has left his grandmother's anklet for her as a gift.

Sakina breaks down in tears and runs after Ranbir Raj's departing train. She calls out his name but he does not hear her. She then sees Imaan standing on the bridge, holding a bouquet of flowers. She runs towards him, but stops midway and looks back at the train. She realizes that she loves Ranbir Raj more than Imaan and regrets letting him go.
